The AA is urging motorists to heed warnings about avoiding flooded roads, saying they’ve received a record number of call-outs this week. The breakdown service said they had attended almost 4,600 breakdowns today, with calls from stranded motorists hitting 900 per hour.

Unfortunately it doesn’t look like the bad weather is going to abate yet. 76 flood warnings and 173 flood alerts have been issued by the Environment Agency. Roads have been closed, homes flooded and travel disrupted, mostly across the Midlands and the South West.

The Environment Agency’s head of flood risk strategy, Pete Fox, said: “there is already significant travel disruption due to the wet weather and we urge people to remain vigilant as further flooding is possible across the South West tomorrow.

We ask that people stay safe, by staying away from swollen rivers and not attempting to drive through flood water. ”

The courier services team know that business can’t grind to a halt just because of the weather, but would urge all drivers to be safe when out on a job. Devon and Cornwall Police warned drivers to be vigilant about the risk of aquaplaning and offered some good advice: “There are significant incidents of standing water being reported on the roads, and so we need drivers to take extra care and adjust their braking times accordingly.

“Drivers need to match their speed to the conditions.”
